Meteora is amazing, stunning and a must see on a Greece road trip. Another of Greece’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Meteora has history, architecture, and adventure.

NOTE: It is possible to do as a day trip from Athens, but spending 2-3 days there is recommended.

History

The region has been inhabited for over 20,000 years. Unfortunately, the Theoptera Cave was closed during my visit. No Worries, it just means I can go back! Meteora is unique in Greek history in that it isn’t mentioned in mythology or ancient literature.

Architecture

One of the big reasons to visit is the monasteries built on the rock pillars. If you are time-limited, like on a day trip, go to St Stephens Monastery. It is by far the best restored and no hiking or climbing is required. The interior was restored in 1998 by Vlasios Tsstsonis. Photos and video are not allowed but you can buy a postcard at the gift shop as I did. NOTE: When I tried to post the photo with artist credit FB and Instagram blocked it.

CAUTION: If you are not dressed conservatively, or conservatively enough, there are wraps to borrow at the ticket kiosk.

Six of the 24 monasteries are open for tourists, but check the schedules because some are closed certain days.

Adventure

You can walk, bike, hike, climb, raft, and paraglide in Meteora. Unless you visit only St Stephens, you will climb up and down from the monasteries or sometimes down then back up. If you like outdoor activities it’s easy to fill a week in Meteora.

Lesson Learned

In winter many restaurants and hotels are closed. Bonus lesson stay in Kalambaka for better food options in walking distance. Highly recommend Octo Coffee for coffee and brunch!
